A tough weather like the one we live in, in the UAE, makes people easily dehydrated and in need of some vitamins and minerals that are not found easily even through a balanced diet.

Vitamins and minerals, such as iron, calcium and vitamin C, are vital nutrients that everybody needs in proper amounts to function correctly.
Many people include vitamins and minerals supplements in their daily diet, however taking excessive amounts, or taking them for a long period could be harmful to the kidneys or other organs.

Multivitamins and vitamins, in general, are important especially for:

  1. Elderly: Senior people need a constant amount of vitamin B12, which gets absorbed less and less with age. According to doctors’ advice, many elderly need a daily calcium and vitamin D intake to sustain their bones and body health.

  2. Pregnant and breastfeeding ladies: Pregnancy affects the minerals and vitamin levels in the body as the baby grows, and even further when the mother breastfeeds. That is why you should consult your doctor for the correct multivitamins dosage, to avoid deficiencies that could harm you or your baby.

  3. Vegetarians and vegans: Because of the lack of animal protein intakes, vegans and vegetarians might need some extra vitamins to keep their bones and teeth strong such as calcium vitamins in tablets or syrup form. It is also advised to consult a healthcare provider for the minerals and vitamins they need the most to be healthier.

  4. Diabetes patients: Diabetics are more prone to suffering from Vitamin B12 deficiency, and a blood test could prove this along with a doctor’s prescription. They also need additional Vitamin E supplements to keep their eye health and arteries under control, too. Magnesium supplements are also important for diabetic patients, as magnesium deficiency causes insulin resistance. Therefore, the patients require larger amounts of insulin to sustain their blood sugar within normal levels.

  5. People who do not get much exposure to the sun: Due to the tough weather conditions in UAE, & the strong sun rays that could be harmful to the skin, most people avoid direct sunlight and benefit from it. Vitamin D isn't present in most of the foods we consume, but it's a crucial ingredient to keep the bones strong by aiding the absorption process of calcium. Getting sunlight helps our bodies produce it as well, but it can be tough to get enough in the winter or during extremely hot days especially in the Emirates. Several modern studies have found that people who took Vitamin D supplements daily lived longer, on average than those who didn't.

  6. Children from 6 months to 5 years: Growing children, especially those who do not eat a varied diet, sometimes do not get enough vitamins A and C. It's also difficult to get enough vitamin D through food alone.
That's why many health organizations recommend that all children aged 6 months to 5 years are given vitamin supplements containing vitamins A, C, and D every day.
It's also recommended that babies who are being breastfed are given a daily vitamin D supplement from birth, whether or not you're taking a supplement containing vitamin D yourself.
Babies who are having more than 500ml (about a pint) of infant formula a day should NOT be given vitamin supplements. This is because the formula is fortified with vitamin D and other nutrients.

In summary, consuming an adequate supplement of vitamins and minerals per doctor’s advice is crucial for everyone’s health and vitality.
